The construction industry should be buoyed by two major announcements in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement today – that’s the verdict from the chairman of Shropshire Constructing Excellence.

Gareth Emberton, who heads up the organisation supporting the construction sector in the county, said growth in infrastructure projects was vital to underpin the competitiveness of the UK in a global market place.

“This gives us not only short term economic stability but long term growth due foreign companies wish in to invest here.

Mr Emberton, who is also managing director of construction and horticulture specialist Crown Group, added: “A £1.3bn investment to overhaul our road infrastructure is one of the largest in recent history and will guarantee new contracts and new jobs for the construction industry. But it is vital that we close the skills gap, so that there is an appropriately trained workforce to support the sector as it grows.”

“The commitment for 40,000 new affordable homes will go some way to easing the country’s housing crisis at the moment and it’s indicative that the Government accepts more properties need to be built in the long term. That’s got to be good news for the construction industry.”
